Mechanical Engineering Design

PD Engineering Consultancy Ltd designs and engineers complex mechanical systems, machinery and fabricated assemblies from our base in Kensworth, near Luton. We cover the full life of an engineered system: concept development, detailed analysis, fabrication support, installation and commissioning.

The work suits main contractors, steel fabricators, developers, architects and manufacturing or facilities managers who need mechanical design they can actually build from. We work on residential, commercial and industrial schemes, and we back every design with calculations and compliance with the relevant standards and regulations.

What's included

Our mechanical engineering capability covers:

  • Plant and mechanical systems — design of plant systems, hydraulic and mechanical components and specialist site-installed structures.
  • Bespoke steel assemblies and lifting equipment — designed using advanced CAD modelling and supported by detailed calculations.
  • Finite element analysis (FEA) and frame analysis — assessing stresses, deflections, load paths and fatigue behaviour under real-world loading.
  • Lifting studies — including detailed lifting analysis and the technical documentation that goes with it.
  • Thermal modelling — part of our wider analytical capability.
  • Fabrication drawings, schedules and specifications — fully coordinated so the design transfers cleanly from model to workshop.
  • Site support — experience with site welding, lifting operations and complex installations, through to commissioning.

Where a job needs it, mechanical design is delivered alongside our electrical, structural and fire engineering work, so you get an integrated solution from one consultancy.

How it works

  1. Brief and site information. We start with what you need the system to do, the constraints on site and any information you already hold.
  2. Concept development. We set out the mechanical approach and the options, so decisions get made early rather than on site.
  3. Analysis and calculations. Frame analysis and FEA are used to check stresses, deflections, load paths and fatigue, and to optimise for strength, weight, durability and manufacturability.
  4. Detailed drawings. Advanced CAD modelling produces coordinated drawings, schedules and specifications supported by calculations.
  5. Fabrication and site support. We stay involved through fabrication, installation and commissioning, including site welding and lifting operations.

Frequently asked questions

What software do you use for design and analysis?

Designs are developed using advanced CAD modelling, with frame analysis and finite element analysis used to check stresses, deflections, load paths and fatigue. If you need us to work in a specific package or to a particular modelling standard, ask us before you appoint and we will confirm.

What do you actually issue at the end?

Fully coordinated drawings, schedules and specifications, backed by detailed calculations and compliance with the relevant standards and regulations. If your fabricator needs a particular file format, tell us at the brief stage and we will confirm what we can supply.

Can you support us on site as well as in the office?

Yes. We regularly support fabrication and installation, and we have experience with site welding, lifting operations and complex installations, through to commissioning.

Can you handle electrical and structural work on the same job?

Yes. Our mechanical work can be delivered in close coordination with electrical, structural and fire engineering, so you get a fully integrated solution from one consultancy rather than chasing several firms.

Have you worked with main contractors before?

We have demonstrated experience supporting Tier 1 contractors and technically complex construction projects, including balcony steelwork for Kier at Watford Riverwell.

Why choose us

Multi-discipline team. Mechanical and structural engineering sit together under one roof, covering design, analysis, fabrication and site delivery, with electrical, controls and fire engineering available alongside.

Proven on complex projects. We have demonstrated experience supporting Tier 1 contractors and technically complex construction projects.

Advanced analysis. FEA, frame analysis, lifting studies and thermal modelling give confidence that components perform as intended.

Design-to-site focus. Drawings and documentation are developed to work in fabrication, installation and handover — not just on screen.

As one client put it: "PD Engineering provided clear, buildable engineering solutions that integrated seamlessly with our wider project team. Their technical knowledge and practical approach helped reduce risk."

How fees are worked out

Every mechanical package is different, so fees depend on the scope: how much analysis is needed, the level of detail in the drawings, and how much fabrication and site support you want us to carry. The quickest way to get a clear figure is to send us the brief and any site information, and we will talk it through with you.

Please ask us directly about fee structures and payment terms — we would rather confirm the detail with you than publish a figure that does not match your job.
